Marco has changed over the years. He looks kind of dangerous now with those tattoos on his arms and neck. But boy, he’s tall and quite good-looking in this bohemian way with his longish hair and sparkling brown eyes. It isn’t everyday that I’m approached by a rock star looking man even though it’s obvious he doesn’t recognize me. At least his eyes hadn’t changed. They still sparkle with mischief.

“What do you think?” he asks me with a dimpled smile.

“Uhm…?” I’m a bit disappointed that he doesn’t recognize me.

“About the painting.”

“Oh…” I return my eyes to the artwork in front of me. “It’s….raw.”

“I like raw.”

I feel my cheeks heat up at the innuendo. I’m not trying to flirt with him, at all. But boy, he looks so fine! He’s certainly looking at me like he’s interested. Right, I shouldn’t be too cautious anymore. I should entertain possibilities. This man has possibilities written in his playful eyes. And I know him. He isn’t a total stranger like Gray— grrrr scratch that!

“I mean, it’s an abstract so it’s open to interpretation. But the artist must be thinking about…regrets…a lot of painful regrets when he did this,” I comment thoughtfully.

He stares at me, amazement in his eyes. “Do you paint?”

“I used to, but I got too busy with my flower shop I hardly find time to paint anymore.”

“You know, you look kind of familiar…” His brows furrow, cocking his head to the side, looking at me intently.

“Marco, don’t you recognize me?”

He stares at me harder, his expression trying to remember.

“It’s Cami. Remember Antonio and Marie from Charleston? The Adelardi Gallery on Broad Street.”

It finally hits him. “Oh my God…Cami….? I didn’t recognize you! You look….” He looks so shocked now, pleasantly so, his eyes raking me from head to toe as though he can’t believe what he’s seeing.

“I know. I lost some weight. Actually, a ton of baby fatsies. Still got some left though.”

He actually turns red in the face. “I didn’t mean it like that…”

I smile. “It’s okay. Congratulations, by the way. This is awesome.”

“Thank you. I’m so glad you came, Cami.” He grasps both of my hands. “Man, look at you! All grown up now. How old were you the last time we saw each other?”

“Uhh, seventeen maybe? I’m twenty-three now, going twenty-four.”

“Wow, has it been that long? How’s Marie?”

“She’s good. She’s still managing the gallery. You should come visit some time.”

“I definitely will, especially now.” His eyes glow with inner light as he stares at me. “We should totally catch up. Listen, I have a dinner party later. Will you stay? Please? I’d like to sit down with you and really catch up. I’ve missed you, Cami.”

I’m sure it’s Amarie he misses. They were good friends before. But I’m glad he’s so warm to me. I feel less of a stranger to this city now that I have someone I actually know here in Atlanta. A man that’s not him.

“Sure. I’d love that, Marco.”

“Great! Come on, let’s look at the other paintings.
